Definition
Diabetic
ketoacidosis is an acute complication of diabetes mellitus type
1. It occurs when insulin is insufficient to control the
hyperglycemia and the ketone body production. Because it may be
associated with severe dehydration and acidosis, it is a MEDICAL
EMERGENCY and a frequent reason for admission to an Intensive
Care Unit.
